More for Your Smile is working to change that by passing a Dental Loss Ratio law to make sure 85¢ of every premium dollar goes to patient care – or it gets refunded.
What is More For Your Smile?
More for Your Smile is a patient-focused campaign to make dental coverage more transparent and accountable, and deliver more value for patient care.
The effort is supported by the Missouri Dental Association. Together, with our member dentists, we want to remove barriers to care, and support policies that put patients first.
Our goal is simple: Make sure dental coverage works for every Missourian, because everyone deserves a healthy smile.

What’s the problem?
Dental insurers in Missouri are not required to spend any set amount of your premiums on care. In fact, up to 40% of what you pay can go to profits and overhead instead of your treatment. Patients end up paying more out of pocket, waiting longer for appointments, or going without care altogether.
More Transparency
Patients, families, and employers deserve to know how their premiums are spent. Right now, there is no requirement for dental insurers to show what share of each dollar goes to care. Clear reporting will shine a light on whether coverage is working the way it should.
More Accountability
Medical insurance already has rules that require 85% of premium dollars to go to care. Dental insurers should meet the same standard. When you pay into a plan, you should have the peace of mind that your money supports your health, not just profits and overhead.
More Value for Patients
Dental care is essential to staying healthy, working, and supporting a family. For children, good oral health aids learning and helps prevent missed school days. A Dental Loss Ratio law will ensure more of every dollar goes to cleanings, fillings, and preventive care.
